Outreach at Hillingdon Samaritans

Hillingdon Samaritans aim to reach as many people as possible who are in need of our support. So we don’t just sit waiting on the end of the phone. We look for alternative ways to reach out to vulnerable people in the community who would otherwise not be able, or feel able, to contact us.

To do this, Hillingdon Samaritans have an Outreach team which works with local organisations and groups to raise awareness of our service. We attend as many local events as we can, give talks about the service Samaritans provide and also the opportunities we offer for people wishing to volunteer.

Through our active involvement in the community we gain a greater understanding of what we can offer to the people who live and work in Hillingdon.

Our Outreach programme includes:

Network Rail

As part of the Network Rail partnership, Hillingdon Samaritans actively support Hayes & Harlington and West Drayton Stations to try to reduce the incidence of suicide on the railways. We organise regular awareness-raising visits to the stations where our Listening Volunteers talk to station users and distribute literature.

Schools

Our trained team of volunteers regularly visits schools and we have developed a School Assembly talk in which we focus on emotional resilience and emphasise the importance of finding ways of coping  with stressful situations. Through visiting schools, we hope to give young people the knowledge that there is someone who will listen to them in complete confidence and without prejudice.

Community Events

We attend many community events in Hillingdon, such as Older People’s Wellbeing Days, Hayes Carnival, West Drayton May Fair and many more. At these events, we hope to raise awareness of our work and also be on hand to give support to anyone who is feeling emotionally vulnerable. These conversations are held in a quiet corner and are in total confidence.

Samaritans Speakers

If you are looking for a speaker at a community event, workplace or local organisation, Samaritans would be happy to help. Our talks are tailor-made to meet your needs. There is no charge for this service, but we are always grateful to receive a small donation to help meet our costs.

If you would like to know more about our Outreach work and how we can help you, or if you would like a speaker, please email us at outreach@hilllingdonsamaritans.org.uk

People talk to us when they need emotional support, in their own way, and off the record – about whatever’s getting to them. You don’t have to be suicidal.
